The husband found a stray kitten on his jobsite. Hence we have a brand new family member that needed all the things that go along with having a cat..i.e. litter box. Our old cat passed away a few years ago and so I gave my trusty littermade self cleaning box to my brother for his new kitty. We found the Scoopfree slide on sale and thought wow it sounds great! We bought it on Sunday and by Tuesday we were disgusted. The claim is that the litter pan lasts a lot longer. The concept is that you slide the rake across and it collects the poops, supposedly the crystals will suck up the urine. Well when you rake it to the "collection area" you actually are scooping up the crystals, so the collection area is full of clean crystals, the other side of the box where you park the rake pushes the rest of the clean crystals behind it so you are left with very little crystals in the middle where your kitty will be doing her business. We cleaned out the presents so all this box had to deal with was urine and concept to reality is not even close. There were yellow spots where she went because all the crystals are piled up on the sides so there is very little to soak up what a kitten produces- I could not imagine what a cat would do to the crystals yuck-o! Your cat will be walking on this yellow yuck and then walking through your house, on your furniture, and if like ours sleeping in our room. Another con is that you have to buy prepacked litter trays that are very expensive. I found a product called a FOREVER TRAY but the maker of the Scoopfree has sued the company so you can only find on ebay for $99. I really wished that this product worked as promised but it did not at all.
Today I went and bought another littermaid to replace this piece of poo. I think not only should I get a refund for this item but also reimbursement for my gas to buy and return item for false advertising. Don't waste your time or money. I would much rather deal with a clumpy rake then urine soaked crystals on my cats feet scattered all over my house.
I love this litter box, but don't like the Fresh Step crystal litter that it comes with. We just dump out the crystal litter and use our normal clay litter, which seems to rake and control odor much more efficiently!
